Abandoned cart recovery

WhatsApp abandoned
cart recovery

Most abandoned carts are not a price problem. Remind shoppers within the hour, answer what stopped them, and keep the discount for last - on the app they already have open.

WHY CARTS GET ABANDONED

Most shoppers do not need a discount

Only one of the five common reasons is price. The others need a reminder, a removed obstacle or an answered question - all of which are free.

  1. 01Interruption: they were doing something else and never came back. This is the largest group by a wide margin.
  2. 02Friction: checkout asked for something they did not have to hand - a card, an address, an account.
  3. 03Uncertainty: delivery time, returns or sizing was unclear.
  4. 04Comparison: they went to check a competitor's price.
  5. 05Price: genuine sticker shock. Real, but a smaller group than most stores assume.
HOW IT WORKS

The three-message
recovery ladder

REMIND. REASSURE. INCENTIVISE. ↓

Within the hour: the reminder

Name the product, show the price and give one tap back to the cart. No offer - most shoppers were simply interrupted.

01

At 24 hours: the objection

Answer what stops buyers in your category: sizing and free returns, delivery dates, warranty.

02

At 72 hours: the incentive

Only now, and only for shoppers who ignored two full-price reasons to buy.

03

These timings are a starting point. Test them against your own store's data.

SET IT UP IN WAPGROWAI

Four things a cart reminder needs

Step 1

Connect your Shopify store

In WAPGROWAI, open Settings → Integrations, select Shopify and authorise the connection. No developer needed.

Shopify WhatsApp integration →

Step 2

Collect the opt-in

You can only message shoppers who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Ask at checkout and again on the order confirmation page.

Click-to-WhatsApp entry points →

Step 3

Use an approved template

A cart reminder starts the conversation, so it must be a Meta-approved template. Start from the abandoned cart template in the template library.

WhatsApp templates and campaigns →

Step 4

Answer the replies

When a shopper replies with a question, it lands in your shared team inbox so a person can close the sale.

Rules every recovery flow needs

  • Stop the moment the order completes. A discount sent to someone who already paid full price teaches your best customers to wait.
  • Pause on a reply. When a shopper asks a question, a person should answer it before any further reminder goes out.
  • Respect quiet hours in the shopper's timezone. A reminder at 2 a.m. earns a block, not a sale.
  • Do not stack it on a broadcast. The combined volume, not one message, is what drives opt-outs.
  • Send high-value carts to a person. A recovered high-ticket order pays for an agent's time.

What to measure

  • Recovery rate per message, so you can see which step does the work.
  • Recovered revenue net of discounts, not gross.
  • Reply rate, because a reply opens the 24-hour window for normal messages.
  • Full-price recovery share. If it falls, the discount is arriving too early.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does WAPGROWAI support abandoned cart recovery for Shopify?

Yes. The Shopify integration sends an abandoned-cart reminder on WhatsApp, alongside order confirmations, shipment updates and cash-on-delivery confirmation. It is included in the Pro plan.

Can I message every shopper who abandons a cart?

No. You can only message shoppers who opted in to hear from you on WhatsApp. Typing a phone number into checkout is not consent, so collect the opt-in at checkout or on the order confirmation page.

What does a WhatsApp cart reminder cost?

Meta charges for each delivered template message, priced by template category and the customer's country. Cart reminders are usually marketing templates. Your WAPGROWAI plan is a separate subscription.

What happens when a shopper replies to the reminder?

The reply lands in your shared team inbox, where an agent can pick it up. A reply also opens WhatsApp's 24-hour window, so your team can answer with normal messages instead of templates.

Should the first cart reminder include a discount?

Usually not. Most shoppers abandon because they were interrupted, not because of price. Remind first, answer objections second, and keep any incentive for the last message.
